Professional Sketch I am an independent, self-employed visual artist (painter) and tile setter. Additionally, I am an adjunct faculty member of the Art Department, Portland State University. My formal art education began in 1985 at the Fine Arts Institution in Amman, Jordan, which is was followed by the College of Fine Arts at Baghdad University in Baghdad, Iraq beginning in 1991. Three years later I immigrated to the United States, where I attended Portland State University and graduated with high honors in Fine Arts and Visual Communications from its Fine Arts Department. I have recently completed my master's study, earning my MFA in Painting and Mixed Media from Warnborough University in England. In addition to working as a graphic artist for more than 10 years, I have conducted workshops as a visiting artist in the United States and overseas and was awarded a grant as a master artist in an apprenticeship program for the Oregon Historical Society. I have had both national and international art shows - more than 15 solo shows in addition to participating in nearly 20 group exhibitions. So, how does this relate to tile setting? While doing all of the above - going to school, teaching and holding art shows - I worked as a tile setter, accumulating nearly 20 years of experience. That, combined with my background, education and training, makes me versatile - I am not "just another" tile setter or contractor. I can install tile or slab in any pattern or design you desire because of my experience and because I approach all projects as art. And that is what distinguishes me from other tile setters: my work is my art, and art is my work. As such, I stand by my work because I want to do a job that makes you happy and makes me proud. I have built a business and reputation that is steeped in integrity. I want to maintain that and add to my list of patrons/clients. I prefer to think that I work with my clients. Clients will hear me say "WE" because you and I become a team in order to achieve your goals. We brainstorm. We plan. And I will help you make decisions on color and design that best suits your needs, your desires and your budget. Over the years I have built my clientele by word-of-mouth. My success lies in good aesthetics and craftsmanship, as well as honesty and trust. And you can be assured that I will "go the extra mile" when it comes to buying material for your project. I work with a variety of suppliers, and any discount I receive will be passed along to you. Thank you for considering sofiaDesigns studios for your tile installation project. My prices are very competitive, and I have a long list of happy clients who I would be more than willing to speak with you. |
